essence of computer science

Some of my favorite quotes about CS:

Programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute. -- Abelson and Sussman in The Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs

Computer Science is a science of abstraction--creating the right model for a problem and devising the appropriate mechanizable techniques to solve it. -- Aho and Ullman

Any programming problem can be solved by adding a level of indirection. -- Anonymous

The user is not me -- Anonymous/Unknown?

Steve,

I'd forgotten that quote. The man is wise... perhaps that's the reason the old Mac classics were designed with their characteristic shape and size. They were practically designed to be thrown out the window (or hit with a sledgehammer, which I've seen done *grin*).
